How to write a comparative essay

How to write a comparative essay

A comparative essay is like the compare and contrast essay, the only difference is that in comparative essay you will have to compare two different topics or things. To start the essay you should first determine the general point or similarity of the two subjects. After figuring out the similarities, you will provide a thesis statement that specifically states what part of the subjects you will be comparing. The body of your essays content will be all about comparing the differences of the two specific subjects.

Once you are done comparing the subjects, your conclusion will be the something that you have learned while comparing two different subjects. Have you discovered that the other one is better that the other? It depends on what are the subjects and what conclusion you have drawn.

As I already mentioned, Mocibobi – a tiny village where we stayed, near a bit bigger (It has it’s own shop and a bar!) Karojba village is not far from Ljubljana, my home town and capital of Slovenia. Not just because I live here, Ljubljana is truly a town not to miss.

Rich history, being a part of Austro – Hungarian Empire for about half a millennium, 4 important years of Napoleon rule as a part of Ilyrian provinces and the last but not least era of biggest Slovenian architect Jože Ple?nik made Ljubljana a very unique place. With less than 300.000 inhabitants it is one of the smallest capitals in the world, but full of attractions and more important, full of nice people.

radius-slovenia (2) radius-slovenia (1)

We spent a full day in Ljubljana! We were exploring the oldest part below the castle, walking on the embankment of green River Ljubljanica, touching antiques at a Flee market and – very important for the painters – we’ve visited the Modern Gallery.

Regular readers have learned till now – or of course knew from before – that our workshop was mainly happening around Croatian peninsula Istria, but very near Slovene border. So, it would be a sin not to cross the border twice.

radius-slovenia (4)

radius-slovenia (7)Apart from a trip to Ljubljana we went to a valley, more close to Alps and therefore totally different landscape than Istria. Amazed by the landscape – and I have to admit I am amazed every time I am there and I sometimes wish I hadn’t been there before so I would have a pleasure to feel again how it is to lay eyes on this valley for the first time – we’ve entered the wine cellar.

Yes, proper wine cellar with oak barrels, bariques and a bit stuffy smell. And we had, what is usual for wine cellars around here, wine tasting served with home made bread, local cheese and local sausages and of course prosciutto. Let us not forget, we were in the land of prosciutto.

To summarize, I can say we’ve seen a lot, we’ve ate a lot of delicious food, drank magnificent wine, we’ve learn a lot and the most important we had fun. And combining this beautiful things with marvelous, pristine environment and warm people that were surrounding me was just great experience. Thanks Louise for all the specially for me chopped tomatoes, Fred for listening what I have to say, thanks David for coming again, Anthony and Claire for being such a great and fun couple, Michael to remind me how confusing was my first travel overseas. Thank you Nicole for a shoulder, Joyce for all the questions, Laura and Danya for being so sweet. Thank you Darryl for fun and all the jokes that you made real. Last but not least, Diego, thanks for introducing me to Radius and of course for all the help and ears.

Motovun, Groznjan, Pula

Our beautiful villa, a rustically designed house where we stayed during the workshop, lies only a few miles from Motovun, a village atop of a hill, known for various reasons.

radiusworkshops 2

One reason is a Motovun Film Festival and other reasons are truffles. Even Anthony Bourdain followed their smell to Motovun and so did we. I won’t write much about it, you have to taste it for yourself, but I am just going to say: amazing gastronomic delight! Along with the truffles, Motovun is a very picturesque town, very medieval and I assure you seeing the sunset from a few centuries old wall, that surrounds the village, is priceless.

radiusworkshops 4

The biggest town in Istria is Pula located at the tip of peninsula and was populated even before the Romans. But, of course, Romans made it big. I love Pula. It is a magnificent little town, full of Roman ruins and even though many tourist do visit it, it is still a proper town with real local people. For me the best thing here is to see a concert in Arena, Pula’s amphitheater or – as it become known among Radius people – not Colosseum, with sunset behind the stage and overlooking the Adriatic see.

radiusworkshops 5

The next best thing to do here is to have a walk with the best guide there is in Pula, Nada. Even though I heard her 3 times already the tour is always different and every time I get to know something new. And we did the walk with the group, which was absolutely amazed by her.

One of the highlights is visiting Marko Zelenko (and his lovely family) at his village Grožnjan. Marko is a Slovene artist, born in this little Croatian village, because his grandfather moved here in the sixties.

At that time Tito, Yugoslavian president, decided to give it to artists from all over Yugoslavia. Medieval village then became an artists Mecca and untill now still is. Wandering on tiny, narrow streets among houses made from blocks of stone one can see many galleries, artistic pieces and artists working.

It all started with natural Viagra…

Text and photos by: Tjaša Janovljak

We started the Radius Workshops Spring Season with a week long painting workshop with Louise Freshman Brown. This was my second season working with Fred and Louise and our meeting in the beginning of May was warm so I instantly knew we had another great week ahead of us.

RADIUS-workshops-Croatia (3)

The travel from my hometown and Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana to the small village of Karojba took about 2 hours in my little, old, white Citroen. The journey included crossing the border into Croatia since peninsula Istria stretches over my native country Slovenia and neighboring Croatia. It is very possible that most readers are asking them self or, these days, typing into Google: Which countries are Slovenia and Croatia?
RADIUS-workshops-Croatia (4)

A very brief introduction would be that these are two little countries in the south of Europe, often called the Pearls of Eastern Europe. These two little countries both arose in 1991 from the former Yugoslavia. If you like maps, open the European map, look for the Italian boot in the lower part of the map, then on the right hand side of the Italy, practically next to Venice, lies first Slovenia, then Croatia. Is that geographically east Europe to you?

RADIUS-workshops-Croatia (6)

Tradition in this area is to welcome a guest, friend or a stranger, with a firm handshake and a shot of homemade brandy. We welcomed our guests with the two most typical of Istria: Biska (usually grape brandy that had mistletoe leaves soaked in it) and honey liqueur, along with homemade cheese, Istrian prosciutto, local olives, vegetables and with one of the best olive oils in the world. It might sound like French Provence, but we have a Mediterranean all our own! Similar, but different. RADIUS-workshops-Croatia (5)

The week was a combination of painting workshops and exploring the area with all the senses. Our first visit was to a neighboring village where the self-professed “Honey Doctors”, two elderly bee-keeping brothers, met us, all dressed up in their suits, which they never wear otherwise. The group tasted different kinds of honey, natural Viagra as they call it (honey with ground nuts), home made honey cream and a few home made brandies. At this point I was very happy to have Diego, our driver with me.

Croatia and Beyond

August 1, 2013 3:24 pm

Poreč Market

This past May we had two workshops in Karojba, Croatia.  We hosted painters for one week with Louise Freshman Brown and 10 Days with Photographer Anna Tomzack.

The Balkans is my new favorite place.  I loved it last year, but this year it really got into my blood. Everyone has their own grappa, or wine, or olive oil, or honey, or ham, or cheese that they are dying to share.

I would drive most mornings from our villa, nestled in a medieval village, 20 minutes to coastal Pore? where I would shop for our dinners at the daily farmers market.  It was my favorite task while I was there.  The marble market building overflowed with the produce of the moment, including wild asparagus, zucchini blossoms, fresh young garlic, apricots and cherries! I chose my favorite vendors and shopped with them for my almost 3 week stay.  I looked forward to seeing them each morning.  The produce lady I frequented would kvetch about her son who was about my age.  (His wife was no-good, etc.)  She complained about her back, asked me about my family and tossed me extra garlic, or scallions, whatever.   We communicated in Charades and a broken patois of Italian, German, English and Croatian.

I would visit the flirty cheese monger, who had befriended me a year before after a near-tragic shopping bag incident, and the fishmonger who assured me I knew nothing about fish soup (I think I make a damn good fish soup).

I would finish my mornings with coffee or a beer at a little Italian/Croatian café in the market with Italian-Croat farmers having their morning grappa.

It is these experiences that linger in my mind.  These everyday human connections resonate.

I can’t wait to go back!

Spring 2012

July 28, 2012 5:52 pm

We are back in blistering hot Florida and already missing Turkey and Croatia. Our Painting and Drawing Workshops with Louise Freshman Brown were a blast!

Our 2012 Eastern Visions workshop took place in bustling, frenetic Istanbul and in the Datca, a sleepy hamlet on a mountainous peninsula separating the blue Mediterranean and the turquoise Aegean seas.

We spent five days in Istanbul exploring the bazaars, mosques and ruins of this most ancient of cities. We cruised the Bosporus Straits from Europe to Asia and back again!

Louise had us drawing, painting watercolors, and creating collages in cafes and teahouses all over this wondrous city. We walked through both ancient ruins and the streets of 21-century Istanbul—a mega-city of 16 million souls.

We then jetted to the Aegean coast, to the Villa Asina, outside of Datca. After the big-city energy of Istanbul, the view of the Mediterranean Sea and the Greek Isles outside our windows was a soothing tonic. Asina was the perfect place for our group to produce art. Sea breezes and delicious Mediterranean food prepared by the Villa owner, Bulent, fueled us! We cruised to the Greek island of Symi for a day and finished up with a show attended by locals and guests.

Balkan Bounty was a blast! We settled in to our gorgeous villa overlooking the vineyards and olive groves around Karojba, Istria, Croatia. Istria is so much like Italy, well, after all, it was part of Venice for centuries, not mention Rome before that (we visited an actual coliseum in Pula).

Radius director and chef Fred shopped the local farmers markets and served up some amazing local cuisine. Speaking of local cuisine, we ate at a truffle restaurant in Motovun that was out of this world! Fresh truffles everywhere, even on the dessert! We visited the Venetian cities on the coast and the hill towns inland where we tasted some of the best wines and olive oils we have ever tasted. We also travelled to Ljubljana (a little jewel of a city!) and up into alpine wine country in Slovenia.

In one day you can have breakfast in Croatia, lunch in Slovenia, afternoon coffee in Italy, and be back in Croatia in time for dinner! Our house manager/guide Tjasa, a Slovenia native, was great,
an enthusiastic wealth of information, and a brilliant shock of color every morning! Diego, our
intrepid driver, navigated the twisting roads with aplomb while dispensing his views of the
Balkans from his perspective as an ex-pat.

We are now preparing our fall workshops in France!!

Neighborhoods of Santiago, DR

March 20, 2012 4:57 pm

We visited several underprivileged communities outside Santiago. I am very familiar with this neighborhood, La Yaguita (yah-GEE-tah) de Pastor,  as I lived here for 2 weeks last summer. Water is turned on 2 days each week and electricity is provided about 3 days a week. Since it is election time in the DR, candidates now pay for these communities to have utilities every day in order to receive support. After elections, it will go back to how it was before.

La Yaguita is relatively well known, however some neighborhoods such as Petchula (pictured here) are so obscure and tucked away, that they cannot be found on any map and many Dominican locals don’t know of their existence. This is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the area. However, I have seen a huge improvement from when I visited last year. Residents have begun to clean up the garbage that once lined the streets. This is important because when it rains a lot, water can flood into houses.

At the end of the week everyone (our group and Accion staff) had dinner at upscale resort called Camp David. I loved being able to talk with the staff and other volunteers from organizations such as the Peace Corps. It’s great having those connections. I also learned some great Spanish dances.

Returning to Santiago for a 3rd time was rewarding because I saw all the progress that is being made there. A lot more work needs to be done but I have noticed a positive change in many of the neighborhoods. This type of traveling and working with kids is so fulfilling to me. I am positive that I will head back to the DR one day, but I am excited to see what other places have in store.

Also, if anyone would like more information about Accion Callejera or anything else contact me at I love talking about it and answering questions!

Adios amigos!

Volunteering in the Dominican Republic

March 13, 2012 4:43 pm

¡Hola a todos! (Hello everyone!)

Here is more from my trip to the Dominican Republic!

We played volleyball with a group of girls at another Santiago school. I would love to work with girls and womens’ empowerment in the future. It is common for girls to quit school early and begin having children at around age 14.

This is Accion Callejera (auck-see-OWN cah-yeh-HEH-ra) and where I do the majority of my work in the Dominican. Boys who live and work in the streets come here to eat discounted meals, bathe, and do activities. There is also a health and psychological center. The DR government grants little to no funding to this facility so it is mainly supported by international and local donations. Volunteers come from around the world to work with these kids.

Since Accion is not an actual school, the children aren’t required to attend. Cheaper meals and field trips such as this one give boys an incentive to want to get off the streets and come to Accion each day. Some boys attend school in the afternoon as well; however they must have a birth certificate to go. This is especially a problem for children from Haiti. Accion staff works on finding the boys birth certificates.

More coming soon!

ITB Berlin

March 13, 2012 4:31 pm

Guten Tag!!

Here in Berlin at the  Cafe Fürst & Iven, next to the Savignyplatz S-Bahn (Metro) station, decompressing after the ITB Berlin International Travel Trade Show.  This was my first time here and was revelatory in a couple of ways

First, the whole world was here, from the Congo to Iran to Andorra and Las Vegas.  The show covered  three floors of an entire indoor fairground.  I would estimate almost 6 city blocks of exhibitions.  Lichentenstien was a mile and a half from Libya, yes Libya is already selling bedouin desert tours and coastal holidays! The world is enormous, and I want to explore more.

Second, the tourism business is both an obnoxious exercise in the promotion of conspicuous consumption and an incredible vehicle for personal growth, creativity and inspiration.  Navigating my way through this monster of a show was the challenge.  I think I did ok. My goal was to meet like-minded travel professionals in the Southern Balkans and Eastern Europe who can assist me in developing meaningful workshop programs and I did just that.  I met with people from Albania, Kosovo, Georgia, Armenia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia-Hertsogovenia, Montenegro, Kazakstan, Croatia, Turkey, Malta and others that I can’t remember.  This is forgotten Europe.  The cultural landscape here is exotic and pastoral.  The Empires of the Byzantines, Austro- Hungarians, Ottomans and Soviets have all left their marks.  These lands have riches of natural beauty, art and architectural grandeur yet also bear the scars of a conflicted and sometimes violent history.  Interestingly, despite the recent European economic downturn, the people I met from these places seemed genuinely positive and hopeful for the future.

Thirdly, Turkey is a POWERHOUSE.  The Turks had an entire stadium’s worth of exhibitions and were charming and sophisticated in their presentations.  There are so many possibilities I want to explore there and I can’t wait to offer new programs in this complicated, and spectacular nation.

Will have more later!

Happy Travels!

Jessica’s Dominican Republic Trip

March 7, 2012 11:11 pm

Hi everyone!

Spring break time has finally arrived so this week’s blogs will take place in the city of Santiago, Dominican Republic. This is my third time here since last spring working with Dominican youth at a facility called Accion Callejera (auck-see-OWN cah-yeh-HEH-ra). I am here with an FGCU-based club called the Dominican Republic Outreach Program. It has been an eventful past few days here so far!

At an outdoor fish market about an hour outside Santiago. The most popular is the local Cotorra fish.

We relaxed at Puerto Plata for a few hours before heading back to Santiago.

My friend Robinson and I watching a basketball game at Accion. Robinson used to attend the center and has now moved up to an employee and role model for the younger boys there.

We played a game of baseball with some of the boys. The Florida Marlins recently donated 60 hats, 18 helmets, and training jerseys to this team.

Eating Abroad

February 29, 2012 4:39 pm

While traveling, the sheer number of things one can do is endless. Local markets, parks, museums, and other attractions are there just waiting to be explored. My main goal while traveling though is usually trying to taste as many local dishes as humanly possible. I am often heard asking “Can we get out of here and find the nearest café?” Understanding a country’s local culture and history is important, but eating and learning how to prepare local dishes can be taken home and shared with friends and family members. I am always on the hunt for recipes and exotic foods so this week I decided to look for mouthwatering eats located the places where Radius will be having its summer workshops. Enjoy!

Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul seems to have a large street food scene so I found these appetizing yet interesting looking snacks that look like well… fried footballs. I can imagine that anything they lack on the outside is made up for with what is on the inside. Ici kofte as it’s called is made fresh daily and stuffed with ground meat, onions, parsley, and spices.

Provence, France
Provence is unique due to that fact that its cuisine blends French and Italian flavors. A traditional and easy to replicate dish is Tomates Provençales.  Tomatoes are stuffed with herbs, spices, breadcrumbs, and garlic & olive oil of course and then baked until golden.

Istria, Croatia
With Istria being famous for its truffles, is safe to say that anything on the menu with this delicacy is sure to be memorable. A basic dish is Croatian hand-rolled pasta (fuzi) sprinkled with truffles.

After reading about all this incredible food, I am ready to pack my bags and head to Europe. For now, spring break in the Dominican Republic will have tocut it. The upcoming blog about what I am eating there is sure to be interesting. Stay tuned!

The newest member of the Radius team!

February 21, 2012 5:32 pm

Painting at a boys school in Santiago, Domincian Republic with Dean (a Peace Corps volunteer)

Hi Everyone!

My name is Jessica and I am thrilled to be the new Radius Workshops marketing intern this semester! I am from Fort Myers, FL and am a 3rd year marketing major at the University of Florida. I applied to be Radius Workshops Marketing Intern because I LOVE traveling and embracing everything that goes along with it.

I think everyone who has a passion for travel can trace back to a memory of when they caught the travel bug. You know, that unexplainable excitement of being in a new looking, new smelling, new sounding place? For me, that time was when I was 8 years old. Having never been on a plane, or north of Tennessee for that matter, I found myself on a 13-hour trek to the small town of Skudeneshavn, Norway. There wasn’t a particular THING about Norway in general that sparked my interest in travel (and certainly not the food). But it was that overall experience of having a change of pace, change of culture and language. It was a place so different than my home.

Traveling anywhere is just good for us. It could be a trip to a different county, state, or country. It could involve staying at The Ritz, in a tent, or on a boat. The most important thing though, in my opinion, is how we travel. We should travel to better ourselves. Maybe we do this by traveling to help others; maybe we do this by taking part in a workshop or program of study.
We can all definitely benefit by veering off the path of ordinary travel and onto the extraordinary voyages where we embrace local food, culture, and people. It is important that we take a chance to recognize what a place truly has to offer instead of being bused from place to place, from landmark to landmark.

Again, I am glad to be a new part of the Radius team! Each week, I will blog about SOMETHING detailing the world of travel, art, or food and culture. I wish I was able to flash forward to next week and begin writing the next blog but for now, it is time to go study for that business statistics exam and write a dreaded finance paper. Long days ahead!

Until next time!

Trieste and Slovene Istria

October 7, 2011 4:29 pm

Zdravo! Thursday my friend Diego and I drove to Italy for some coffee. It’s amazing how close places are around here. Within an hour we were in Trieste, a gorgeous, hilly hodgepodge of architectural styles. Medievil, Austro-hungarian, Venetian, authoritarian modernist and mid-twentieth century communist architecture sit in the uneasy harmony that reflect the city’s erratic history.

Next we headed south along the coast, through Venetian fishing villages, and back in to Slovenia, down the Istrian coast. We stopped just past Isola up on polychromatic green cliffs abundant with vines and groves.
